Defoliants

A defoliant can be used as a harvest aid. Te defoliant will help to speed up and even out the dry down of the dry beans. Sodium chlorate and Paraquat are defoliants labeled for dry beans. The defoliants can be applied when at least 80% of the pods are yellowing or ripe and 40% ( bush type ) or 30% ( vine type ) of the leaves are still green. Good coverage is essential. Make sure at least the minimum labeled gallon/acre are applied. Weather conditions at application should be at least 70 degrees F and sunny. Know the when direction and speed. Spray drift from the defoliants can damage other crops. NOTE: Roundup HAS NOT been labeled for use as a dry bean defoliant. Check with Central Valley Bean Co-op for latest information on Roundup. Application of an unlabeled pesticide will make your dry bean crop unmarketable.
